The Annapurna Base Camp Trek in Nepal is one of the most popular treks in the Annapurna region, known for bringing trekkers close to major Himalayan peaks in a relatively short time. The route passes through rice paddies, rhododendron forests, and high-altitude landscapes, with views of the Annapurna Range for much of the journey.
The trek reaches Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 metres and passes through Machhapuchhare Base Camp at 3,719 metres. Peaks visible on the journey include Machhapuchhare, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli.
Accommodation during the trek is primarily in teahouses or guesthouses. The trek is also known as the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek because it follows a protected area trail. The Annapurna Conservation Area is home to wildlife including Himalayan tahr, musk deer, snow leopards, langur monkeys, birds, butterflies, and marmots.
The approximate trekking distance is 70 km. The trek is described as moderate, with some sections presenting challenges. Daily trekking durations typically range from 4 to 8 hours over varied terrain, including uneven trails and steep ascents and descents.
The best time to do the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is during summer and autumn, specifically from April to May and September to November, when conditions are described as offering clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and good mountain views.
Altitude sickness is a potential risk because Annapurna Base Camp is above 4,000 metres. Proper acclimatization, gradual ascent, and staying hydrated are important. Trekkers should watch for symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.
Facilities along the route are basic. Teahouses may offer electricity charging through solar power or generators, though availability can be limited or unreliable in remote areas. Restroom facilities are typically basic, including squat toilets or pit toilets.
